Course Description
Cobalt Analytics helps you understand how to analyse your data in a rich and compelling way. Through this introductory course we’ll review how to get started with Power BI to start analysing your data.
This course will discuss the various methods and best practices that are in line with business and technical requirements for modelling, visualising, and analysing data with Power BI. The course will also show how to access and process data from a range of data sources including both relational and non-relational data. This course will also explore how to implement proper security standards and policies across the Power BI spectrum including datasets and groups. The course will also discuss how to manage and deploy reports and dashboards for sharing and content distribution. Finally, this course will show how to build paginated reports within the Power BI service and publish them to a workspace for inclusion within Power BI.
Outline
- Module 1: Power BI Overview
- In this module, we look at what Power BI is, how it’s licensed and how to install it. We also review the report that we will be creating together.
- Module 2: Preparing your data
- Import, cleanse and transform your data using Power Query, Microsoft’s Excel-like data import tool. Power Query supports connections to a large number of data sources and a large collection of transformations to clean and shape the data just the way you need it.
- Module 3: Modeling your data
- The ability to create relationships between table is one of the major differences between Power BI and Excel which allows users to interact with data in new and exciting ways. you will also learn about DAX which is the powerful calculation language behind Power BI.
- Module 4: Visualizing your data
- Power BI’s rich set of built-in visuals supported by a growing set of custom visuals allowing users to create stunning interactive visuals that help drive deeper insights into their data.
- Module 5: Publishing your report
- Not only does the Power BI service allow you to share your report with your peers but also includes an amazing set of machine learning tools such as Q&A and quick insights that allow you to interact with your data in ways that you could not have imagined

Michael Johnson
Michael is the Founder and Vice President Innovation and Learning for Cobalt Analytics. Michael uses his extensive knowledge of the BI Stack (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS) to deliver engaging training content. He also has experience with T-SQL, DAX, Power Platform and Azure Data Services. Michael is known for his impressive knowledge of the Microsoft Power BI tool. He runs the Johannesburg SQL Server User Group and loves being involved in the world of Business Analytics.
